Artist Statement

I have enjoyed a solid career in graphic design spanning over twenty years in Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and Dallas/Fort Worth, where I now reside. Art and design have become happily linked in my chosen painting medium of mixed media. I employ graphical markings, typography, and layers emphasizing strong composition. I mix layers to create a history, and I enjoy combining acrylic, glazes, charcoal, oil and cold wax. On pieces that employ collage I work in photography, often from my personal travels. My philosophy as a “hybrid” creative has become my unique visual vocabulary.

Working with multiple layers provokes a tension between opaque vs. transparent, saturated vs. neutral, and hard vs. soft line. I seek to let the materials “paint themselves” and allow the direction to emerge from within by a process of masking and revealing disparate layers. I often work on multiple paintings at once to allow a natural cycle of rest and activity for each piece. The work is about the process—and like a gift, the finished piece reveals itself at the right time.
